The Red Sorrel Rum Punch

A Papa’s Pilar Original Cocktail

Papa's Pilar Rum

Papa’s Pilar Rum

In much of the Caribbean red sorrel is Hibiscus tea; particularly consumed during Christmas and New Years. This magical elixir is thought to have medicinal properties including lowering blood pressure. For most of us blood pressure tends to equate to stress and anxiety; something that is the enemy of our laid back island lifestyles. But on those days when the world is creeping in on that easy going vibe you need something with a little more kick! And as we are rum people that of course is our first thought.

Enter, The Red Sorrel Rum Punch.  This magical cocktail will take the edge off of any holiday party and keep that blood pressure at healthy levels.  So whether you are like us and on the beach during the holidays or need an escape to someplace a little more tropical and stress free, this cocktail will be sure to have you sinking those toes just a little further into the sand; even if only in your mind.

So here’s how it’s made.

Ingredients

First the tea (Agua de Flor de Jamaica)

  • 1.5 cups sugar
  • 2 cups dried hibiscus flowers
  • 3 whole allspice berries
  • 1 stick of cinnamon
  • 5 cups water

Bring water to a boil then add in sugar until it dissolves (about 1 minute). Remove from heat and add hibiscus flowers, allspice, and cinnamon. Cover and let sit for 1 hour at room temp.  Filter through a fine mesh strainer and discard the solids.  Chill the mixture for 2 hours.

The Cocktail:

  1. Fill a Collins glass 3/4 with ice.
  2. Add 1.5 oz of Papa’s Pilar Blonde Rum.
  3. Juice from 1/2 a lime.
  4. Top with the Agua de Flor de Jamaica.
  5. ENJOY AND RELAX!!!
