The Mistress – A New Classic Cocktail

Named after the 1930’s all wood schooner, The Schooner Mistress

Picture this, a beautiful Playboy model, in a Conch Republic Bikini, perched on the bowsprit of a 1930’s all wooden schooner.  Cat calls and whistles from shrimp boat sailors ring out across Safe Harbor in Stock Island, near Key West.  It’s so hot you can see sweat beads rolling down her cleavage as you set up for the perfect shot.  After this you’ll be sitting in the cool air conditioning of a bar on Duval Street with friends laughing about your good fortune.  Great visual isn’t it?

It actually went down like that last summer.  Nicky was our first model as we launched my bikini company, Conch Republic Bikinis in Key West.  We were photographing in Stock Island and happened across the majestic Schooner Mistress, her Captain, Glenn McCormick, was working on her (all good sailors are always working on their craft).  Boldly, I asked if we could bring Nicky on board for some pictures.  He laughed as if it were the stupidest question in the world. Of course we could.

The greatest part is that I didn’t just get awesome images of Nicky, I gained a new great friend. Come to find out, Glenn is a former Naval Aviator like myself.  He flew F-14 Tomcats, I won’t hold that against him.  Since that day we have drunk many a can of Guiness on the Mistress talking airplanes and scary dark nights behind the carrier.  His beautiful first mate, Julie is his equal when it comes to brain and leaves one scratching their head on how he got so lucky.

It is therefore a combination of the Schooner Mistress, Glen and Julie that inspired me to sit down to create a drink that was worthy.  Here is my best try.  I got to make this drink on the Mistress last October for them, and I think it was a hit.  It is a twist of the classic Dark & Stormy.

  • 1 Part Canton Ginger Liqueur
  • 1/2 Part Goslings Rum
  • 1/2 Part Sailor Jerry’s Rum
  • 1/4 Key Lime

Shake of Angostura Bitters

Shake, pour into highball glass w/crushed ice.

Pour halfway to top with Ginger Beer

Top with sparkling water

Garnish with lemon.  Squeeze to taste.

Lift your glass and toast Glenn and Julie’s marriage on the 11th of June this week. May you have many miles of calms seas, deep blue water and warm trade winds ahead of you.

Great story about the Mistress Carl. If funny how great things can happen when all you do is ask. Ask for some photo on a beautiful boat, and you make a great friend. Win Win.
