Bar’s like Bomba’s won’t be around forever. Visit and enjoy them while you can.
If you are into beach bars even just a little bit, I’m guessing you know or have at least heard of The Bomba Shack. The shack was built by a horny old guy named Bomba back in 1976. The setting is breathtaking, situated directly on the beach in Cappoons Bay on the north west corner of Tortola, BVI. As cool as this bar is, it didn’t become famous until 1989 when Bomba decided to start throwing a Full Moon party, complete with his own mystical mushroom tea.
Some say the tea leads to hallucinations. Some say it’s a bullshit marketing gimmick. I can’t say as I wasn’t there for a full moon. Though I missed the big party, what I gained was almost two hours one on one with Bomba, the man himself. He recalled stories of crazy naked parties of moons gone past. He reminded me that February 1865 was the only month recorded in history without a full moon as he laughed. The bar is replete with pictures of hot naked drunk girls sitting in Bomba’s lap. He doesn’t seem to discourage such antics and there is a prominent sign on the front that reminds everyone that Bomba’s is an adult bar.
I got a good laugh while doing my background research for this article. I happened over to Trip Advisor and found countless one star reviews of how bad the place was. How dead it was or how there was no energy. Some complained about the panties and naked pictures. Wow, get a life or go home. Bomba’s is no different than any other beach bar in the tropics. The vibe and attitude begins with you. If you need a crowd, loud music and too much rum (if there is such a thing) in order to get into the island vibe then go back to your velvet roped night clubs in your particular frozen city. I hope I never run into you while I’m down island. I got a better idea. Go home and enjoy your Bahama Breeze Restaurant in all it’s plastic fake persona and I’ll take Bomba’s any day of the week, busy or quiet.
After a good long laugh with Bomba, I grabbed a beer as the sun set and looked out across the water at Jost van Dyke. Places like Bomba’s, Ivan’s Stress Free and Stanley’s Welcome Bar won’t’ be around forever. Sure they’ll be replaced by a new generation but they’ll never be the same. I recommend you stop by Bomba’s on your next trip to Tortola even if it is not the Full Moon. If you happen to make the Full Moon, make sure you send me pictures of all the naked drunken fun. Will you do that for me?
